Kerning is at once one of the more tedious jobs in typeface design and one of the more important things in polishing a typeface for release. This one day workshop will focus on various tools and strategies for reducing the tedium of kerning. Topics such as interpolating kerning, how best to put kerning data into your font for various platforms and uses, proofing and testing kerning, right to left kerning, and contextual kerning will be covered.
About Ben Kiel
Ben Kiel is a typeface designer, an educator, and a partner in XYZ Type. Ben worked for several years at House Industries, with a specialty in solving complex problems at the overlap of design and technology. He received his MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading. He currently teaches at Washington University in Saint Louis and Type@Cooper.
