Most design today is dynamic: displaying live data, responding to user input, adapting to a dizzying array of devices, and on and on. Designers in this environment must think, not just visually, but programmatically as well. Learning to program can sensitize us to the limitations—and the power—of creating with code.

In this introductory five-session weekly workshop, students will learn the basics of p5.js, a popular and approachable JavaScript library for creative coding. By the end, they will have a grasp of core coding concepts, such as variables, logic, looping, functions, and data structures, as well as an appreciation for how code and visual thinking can inform each other, leading to fruitful surprises.

All classes will be synchronous and remote, and there will be a mix of instruction, demos, exercises, and assisted in-class work. Students will be expected to apply what they learn to experimental sketches outside class, but the workload will largely depend on their individual curiosity.

No prior coding experience is necessary, as we will cover basic skills in class.
