Typeface design education from Cooper Union
Whispering type 1200x400

Type Whispering
with Frederik Berlaen and Ryan Bugden

In 6 sessions, of 3 hours each, on Mondays and Wednesdays, students dive into the practice of typedesign by looking at type and the shapes within. Through research and analysis of shapes, you will learn the language of letter forms both on a visual and on a narrative level. By sketching and drawing digitally an alphabet will be completed. Please note that this class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am to 12 pm (EDT) except for June 14, when the time will be 1 pm to 4 pm.

Participants bring their own found type: collect lettering or typography in your neighbourhood or pin your favourite travel destination on a map in street view. These found artefacts are shared in the group and will be used as a starting point. It is very likely you will not work on your own found lettering.

During those sessions participants will chat about shapes and letters, followed by an intense drawing session. Sketching techniques both on paper as digitally will be explained. Followed up by adding missing lowercase or uppercase letters by extracting rules from the given letters.

In the end, participants will have an 'unfinished' typeface with lowercase or uppercase letters. But each one will be forced to draw something different that they are used to.

All sessions will happen virtually with all the benefits of online interactions. Sessions will happen on Mondays and Wednesdays. In between session its advised to spend some time mostly on drawing both on paper as digitally.

No previous experience is necessary.

A student license for RoboFont will be provided.
